But sometimes, you may not want these smart quotes to be used, or maybe you want them but can’t figure out how. In this article, I’ll show you how to fix the quote marks in Word, and also share useful tips to improve your typing efficiency.

What Are Smart Quotes?

Smart Quotes are quotation marks that curl either to the left or to the right depending on their position in the sentence. Word does this automatically, hence the name “smart”. In the past, typewriters could only produce straight quotes due to their limitations.

“So, what’s the problem?” You might ask. “Aren’t left and right quote marks better anyway?”. Well, yes and no. Smart quotes are certainly the correct way to write a quotation mark. However, there are situations where using smart quotes may not be advisable. Some printers, for instance, don’t recognize smart quotes and can lead to printing errors. Additionally, webpage languages like HTML and CSS have specific codes for straight and smart quotes. Therefore, choosing one over the other might affect what is displayed on the screen.

Enabling Smart Quotes

To make sure that smart quotes are enabled in MS Word, you can check the formatting settings:
