How To Enable Chrome Dark Mode

I’m excited to share with you a cool trick today! Did you know that you can make your Windows desktop dark? And guess what? The upcoming Windows 10 update will also let you turn Windows Explorer dark. It’s a shame that browsers seem to be lagging behind in this trend. Even Firefox and Microsoft Edge have their own dark modes. But fear not, my friend, because it seems that Chrome now has one too, in its own peculiar way. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to enable Chrome’s dark mode.

Now, before you dismiss dark modes as something only emos or black clothing enthusiasts would appreciate, let me enlighten you. They are not just a fashion statement; they actually benefit our eyes and save precious battery life. So, if you are a phone or laptop user, this is definitely something you should consider. Personally, I also find webpages displayed within a dark browser much easier to read. I think it has to do with the contrast. It’s just more pleasant on the eyes.

However, I must be honest with you. Chrome doesn’t come with a built-in dark mode or the ability to automatically turn websites dark. But here’s the silver lining: there are plenty of dark mode themes available in the Chrome Web Store, and there are also some handy extensions that can do the heavy lifting for us. If you’re familiar with using extensions in Chrome, setting everything up will take you less than 30 seconds. That’s right, it’s super quick!

Chrome dark mode

Hey there! Have you checked out the fresh new look of Chrome 69? It’s seriously cool! Personally, I’m kinda falling in love with it and thinking about making Chrome my go-to browser again. But let’s get right to it – here’s how you can enable Chrome dark mode. It’s simple, but you’ll need a dark theme and a dark mode extension for Chrome.

So, to get started with a dark Chrome theme:

  1. First, head over to the Chrome Web Store.
  2. In the left menu, click on Themes and type ‘dark’ into the search box.
  3. Browse through the themes and pick one that catches your eye. Personally, I went with Morpheon Dark because it had loads of positive reviews.
  4. Once you’ve found the perfect theme, go ahead and install it. Easy peasy, right?

As soon as you install the theme, you’ll notice an awesome transformation. The title and URL bar will turn sleek black, and even the new tab window will embrace the darkness. And don’t worry, if you’re not feeling it, simply hit the Undo button to revert back to your previous look.

If you ever change your mind and want to go back to the default theme, just head to the Settings menu, find the Themes option, and hit Reset to Default. Cool, huh?

Dark web pages in Chrome

Have you noticed that the dark theme in Chrome doesn’t change the color of web pages? They still show up in their default colors, which defeats the purpose if you’re looking for a better experience for your eyes. Luckily, there’s a Chrome extension called Dark Mode that can fix this issue.

Dark Mode has been getting a lot of attention on the internet because it’s a game changer for web users. It flips the script on web pages by inverting their colors. Instead of white pages with black text, you get black pages with white text. It works for most web users, but not everyone.

  1. To get Dark Reader, follow this link.
  2. Install the extension and enable it if prompted.

Once you’ve installed Dark Reader, you’ll notice a small icon on the right side of the URL bar. All web pages will now appear black. If you like the look, you can leave the icon alone. If you want to turn it off, simply click on the icon. You can also right-click the icon to customize the settings and adjust the colors and other preferences according to your liking.

Enable Gmail dark mode

Chrome may not have a built-in dark mode, but Gmail does. Even Outlook now has a dark mode, so it’s a good thing Gmail offers it too. The dark mode in Gmail is just as effective as the extensions mentioned above, and the best part is, it’s already built into Gmail, so you don’t need to install any additional extensions just for your email. However, if you’ve already installed other dark modes, you can skip this step. But since it’s built-in, I’ll show you how to enable it anyway.

  1. Open Gmail and go to your Inbox.
  2. Click on the cog icon in the top right corner and select “Themes”.
  3. Scroll down to find the “Dark” or “Terminal” theme and select one of them.

The downside with these two themes is that they don’t maintain the dark mode when you open an email. Instead, it switches back to the default white theme with red accents. That’s why I mentioned this last. If you use Dark Reader, all pages will be black, not just the main ones.

I find the combination of Chrome dark mode and Dark Reader particularly useful when using my computer at night. It helps reduce the amount of blue light that keeps me awake, and it also prevents me from getting complaints about having a bright screen when someone next to me is trying to sleep. Whether it actually helps your eyes or not is subjective, but I prefer using it for my own reasons.

What about you? Do you use Chrome dark mode? Do you have any other themes or extensions that you would like to suggest? Feel free to share your thoughts with us in the comments below!
