This method was tested on the latest Fire TV Stick 4K, but the steps should be similar for other versions.

ADB debugging allows you to connect your device using Android Debug Bridge. But don’t worry, we won’t be using ADB for this, so you can ignore this setting for now. Instead, let’s focus on the setting below ADB.

Now, this next setting is really important. It’s called “Apps from Unknown Sources.” Enabling this setting will allow you to install apps from places other than the Amazon Appstore. Why is this important? Well, we need to do this if we want to sideload Kodi onto your device.

However, there’s something you should know. Downloading apps from sources other than the Amazon Appstore can be risky, and a warning may pop up to let you know that. But don’t worry, we’ll take precautions and make sure everything is safe. Just click “OK” on the prompt that appears and then press the Home button on your remote to go back to the home screen.

Getting Kodi on your device

Now that you have the ability to sideload apps on your device, it’s finally time to download Kodi. If you’ve ever used an Android device and had to sideload an app using an APK from sites like APKMirror or APKpure, you can probably guess what’s coming next. Although your Amazon Fire Stick may have a customized version of Android with its own app store and some restrictions on what can be installed, the fact that it runs on Android allows us to take advantage of sideloading and bring Kodi to your device, regardless of what Amazon wants.

To achieve this, the first step is to enable downloading of applications on your Fire Stick. Unfortunately, Amazon hasn’t provided a browser for your device. But worry not! You can get a third-party app that will let you use URLs on your Fire Stick just like you would on a regular phone or tablet. It’s worth mentioning that although you won’t find a specific browser app in the App Store, there is an alternative app that lets you directly download content onto your device.

To find the app we need, we can either use the built-in search function or ask Alexa on your Fire Stick remote. Just search for “Download,” “Downloader,” or “Browser” – all three will lead us to the same app. This app is simply called Downloader, and you’ll recognize it by its bright orange icon with a downward-facing arrow. It’s developed by AFTVnews.com and is highly recommended by many users as a great application for your device.

To add the Downloader app to your device, simply hit the download button on the Amazon Appstore listing. Once we’re done with the installation process, you don’t have to keep the app on your Fire Stick. If you prefer, you can uninstall it without any worries.

Once the app finishes installing, press the Open button on the app listing to open Downloader on your device. Keep clicking through the various pop-up messages and alerts that describe updates to the application until you reach the main screen. Downloader has several useful features, which are conveniently listed on the left side of the application. These include a browser, a file system, settings, and more. However, the most important feature of the application is the URL entry field that occupies most of the screen inside the application.

How to Install Kodi on Your Device

Now that you have downloaded the APK onto your device, it’s time to install Kodi directly onto it. Don’t worry, it’s still very ‘Android.’ Use your remote to highlight and select the “Install” button, and your device will start installing Kodi. Keep in mind that Kodi is a large application, so it may take some time to install on your device. In our installation, it took about thirty seconds in total.

Once the installation is complete on your device, a small notification will appear in the bottom-right corner of your screen. It will let you know that you can press the menu button to open Kodi. Another option is to click the “Open” button on the installation display to automatically open Kodi. When you open Kodi, you’ll see the start-up screen and once it finishes setting itself up after the first boot, you’ll be taken to the main display. From here, you can add repositories, view movies stored on your network, and much more. The best part is that you have the flexibility to switch back to the standard Fire TV home screen by pressing the Home button on your remote. This way, you get the best of both worlds – Kodi and Fire OS apps existing peacefully on the same platform.

Move Kodi to the Top of Your Apps List

Now that you’ve installed Kodi on your device, let’s make sure it’s easy to find on your home screen. To do this, go back to your main home screen by pressing the Home button on your device. Then, hold down the Home button to load the shortcuts on your Fire Stick. Click on the Apps shortcut to see your list of applications.

At the bottom of this list, you’ll see Kodi. Since it’s the newest app, it’s automatically placed at the bottom. But that makes it difficult to access from your main display, unless it’s in your recents tab, which might not always be the case. So, we need to move Kodi to the top of your app list to make it easier to access from the main menu.

To get started, go to the bottom of your list and make sure the Kodi tile is selected. Then, press the Menu button on your remote (it looks like three horizontal lines) to see your options for the app. You’ll see three choices: Move, Move to Front, and Uninstall. While you can move the app wherever you want by selecting “Move,” I suggest just moving it to the front of your app list. This will place it directly on your home screen, at the top of the “My Apps and Games” list.
