Entering and Exiting Full Screen Mode on Mac OS X

Apple made some changes in Yosemite that made it even easier to unintentionally enter full screen mode. They modified the buttons in the title bar of a window, leading to more accidental activations of this mode.

In previous versions of the Mac operating system, from OS X Lion through OS X Mavericks, there used to be a button in the upper-right corner of a window that allowed users to enter full screen mode.

From OS X Lion through OS X Mavericks, you could simply click a small icon in the upper-right corner of a window. This icon showed two arrows pointing away from each other and would activate full screen mode. However, things changed with the introduction of OS X Yosemite. Apple decided to remove this icon and repurpose the green zoom button located on the top-left side of the window. Traditionally, this button was used to maximize a window to its largest size. In Yosemite, clicking this button now triggers full screen mode.

In the latest version of OS X Yosemite, they’ve made a change to the green button in the top-left corner of the window – it now functions as the full screen button.

This change might cause some users to accidentally enter full screen mode, but here’s the trick: these buttons actually disappear when an app is already in full screen mode. To access them, all you have to do is hold your mouse or trackpad cursor at the top-left corner of the screen and wait for a second or two. Then the buttons and menu bar will appear – a step that might not be immediately obvious to newcomers to OS X.

If you manage to get the hidden bar to appear in full screen mode, you can easily exit the mode by clicking the green button again. But there’s a faster way, and that’s using the keyboard. There are two keyboard methods to leave full screen mode in OS X:

• Press the Escape key
• Use the keyboard shortcut Control-Command-F

The Escape key is easier to remember and use, but it may not work with all apps. Plus, it can only take you out of full screen mode – it can’t enable full screen mode from the Desktop. So it’s better to memorize Control-Command-F if you plan on using full screen mode frequently in OS X. With this shortcut, you can quickly switch an active app into full screen mode when you want to focus on one thing at a time, and then easily exit full screen mode whenever you’re done.
