This feature allows me to share my current location with my friends and potentially with all other users on the platform, depending on my privacy settings. Not only that, but I can also see publicly shared posts from any city or country I choose.

Now, don’t get me wrong, this feature can be useful in certain situations. For example, during Hurricane Harvey, it was used to document the destruction caused by the storm. However, in this digital age where we all sometimes want to disconnect for a moment, the idea of everyone knowing where I am at all times can feel a bit unsettling, to say the least.

Thankfully, Snapchat allows me to choose whether or not I want to share my location. It’s an opt-in feature, which means I have complete control over when and how I use it. In this article, I’ll show you how to turn it on and off.

How to Enable Ghost Mode when First Using the App

When you download and install Snapchat on your iPhone or Android device, you’ll instantly have access to the Snap Map feature. Simply pinch anywhere on the screen and you’ll be asked to select your visibility preferences. You’ll be given three options:

If you want to make your location unknown to your friends and make yourself invisible from Snapchat maps, you can do so by turning on “Ghost Mode.” In Ghost Mode, only you can see yourself on your Snap maps, and you will be invisible to your friends and all other Snapchat users.

If you want to select specific friends or family members to share your location with while keeping it hidden from others, you can use the “Select Friends…” option. This way, you can handpick the people you want to give access to your location info.

To turn on Ghost Mode and make your location unknown to your friends, follow these steps:

1. Ghost Mode – Only you can see yourself on your Snap maps, and you will remain invisible to your friends as well as all other Snapchat users.
2. My Friends – All your Snapchat friends will be able to see your location at any given moment.
3. Select Friends… – This allows you to handpick the friends you want to give access to your location info. This is particularly useful if you want to share your location with select friends or family members, but don’t want random acquaintances to locate you.

How to Turn On Ghost Mode from the Camera Screen

If you have decided to activate Ghost Mode after having shared your location for a while, you can do so in a similar way to the previous method. Start by pinching the camera screen to enter the Snapchat map, and then tap on the Settings (cog) icon in the top-right of the screen.

In the Settings menu, simply toggle the switch next to “Ghost Mode” to “on,” and your friends will no longer be able to see your current location on their Snap maps.

Turning on Ghost Mode is Easy!

If you’re scared of accidentally messing things up like many of us do, you can turn on Ghost Mode right from the Snapchat Settings. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Open Snapchat.
2. Tap on your Bitmoji in the top-left corner of the screen. If you haven’t set one up yet, tap on the Snapchat icon. Did you know that this icon is a tribute to Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah and is called Ghostface Chillah? Pretty cool, huh?
3. Tap on the Settings icon.
4. In the Settings menu, find “See My Location” under “Who Can…”.
5. In the My Location menu, toggle the switch next to “Ghost Mode” to “on”.

And that’s it! Your location will be hidden from everyone. No one will know where you were when you turned on Ghost Mode. If you ever want to start sharing your location again, just follow these steps and toggle the Ghost Mode switch to “off”.

Just like before, if you want to stop using Ghost Mode and let your friends see your location, all you have to do is follow these steps: 1-4 and then switch it off in step 5.

Who Can See Your Location When Ghost Mode is Off?

When you decide to turn off Ghost Mode and let your location show again, the sharing settings will be the same as before. So, if you chose “My Friends” before, it will automatically go back to that option.

If you used to only show your location to specific friends, don’t worry, Snapchat will remember that. So, when you make your location visible again, you won’t have to recreate the list from scratch.
