How to Automatically Lock Your Apple Watch

The Apple Watch has completely changed the way we think about smartwatches, no doubt about it. It has strong hardware and its software is easy to control with an iPhone. However, there’s one small downside – by default, the watch doesn’t lock, which can make it less reliable. But don’t worry, there’s a solution! I’m going to show you how to set your Apple Watch to automatically lock itself when you’re not using it. So let’s get started!

Enabling and Disabling Screen Lock on Series 3 and 4

How to Enable Screen Lock

If you have an Apple Watch Series 3 or 4, you can enable the screen lock feature directly on the watch, without needing to use your iPhone:

To get started, let’s go to the Apps menu. You can go there by pressing the Digital Crown, which is the round red button on the right side of your Apple Watch.

Next, find the settings and choose Passcode.

Once you’re there, tap on “Turn Passcode On.”

You’ll need to create a new passcode, which should be a four-digit number. It’s important to have one for security purposes.

The watch will ask you to enter the passcode again to make sure you typed it correctly the first time.

Lastly, in the menu that follows, turn on the “Wrist Detection” option if it’s not already enabled. This feature will lock the watch when it’s not on your wrist to keep it safe.

To unlock the screen, press the Side Button, which is the oval-shaped button next to the Digital Crown, and enter your passcode.

If you want to change your passcode, follow the same steps as before to access the passcode settings. This time, select “Change Passcode.” For security reasons, you’ll need to enter the old passcode first and then enter the new one twice.

If you no longer want a passcode, go to the passcode settings and choose “Turn Passcode Off.” You only need to enter your passcode once to confirm the removal.

If you change your mind and prefer to manually lock your Apple Watch, you’ll first need to turn off the Wrist Detection option.

To do this, open the Control Center by swiping up while on the Watch face. Then, tap on the lock icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

If you need to lock the screen during an activity, swipe right and tap on the “Lock” option. To unlock the watch afterward, press the Side Button and the Digital Crown at the same time.

If you have an iPhone, you can also access and control your Apple Watch through the Watch app.

To unlock your Apple Watch using your iPhone, go to the passcode settings on your Apple Watch and turn on “Unlock with iPhone.” On your iPhone:

1. Open the Watch app.

2. Go to the My Watch tab.

3. Select “Passcode.”

4. If it’s not already enabled, tap the switch to turn on the “Wrist Detection” option.

Note: If you keep this option off, some Watch functions won’t work properly.

To change your Apple Watch passcode on your iPhone, access the passcode settings in the Watch app. Choose the option “Change Passcode.” Additionally, if you want a passcode with more than four digits, turn off the “Simple Passcode” option.

To turn off the passcode, go to the passcode settings and select “Turn Passcode Off.”

Turn Off the Passcode

If you want to disable the passcode on your iPhone Watch app, you can do so in the passcode settings. Just look for the option “Turn Passcode Off” located above the “Change Passcode” option.

Water Lock

Water can activate your screen, which can be a problem. But don’t worry, Apple Watch Series 2 and newer versions have a solution called Water Lock. This feature, available in watchOS 5 and newer, keeps water out of your device’s speaker holes, protecting it from damage.

It’s important to note that the Workout app also has a water activity option that automatically enables Water Lock. However, outside of workouts, you’ll need to turn it on manually using these steps:

  1. Swipe up on the Watch’s Face screen to access the Control Center.
  2. Tap on the droplet icon to enable Water Lock. This will prevent you from using the device until you turn it off.
  3. Rotate the Digital Crown counterclockwise. The Apple Watch will confirm when the Water Lock is disabled.

Ensuring Watch Security

It’s important to take extra precautions to keep your Apple Watch safe, as it can be easily lost. Setting up an automatic lock or passcode is helpful because it allows you to reset the watch if it’s ever stolen. Additionally, remember to keep your passcode safe. Forgetting it means that you’ll have to reset the watch and lose all your data.
