Installing Kodi on a Raspberry Pi: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hey there! Today, I want to walk you through the process of setting up Kodi on a Raspberry Pi. Trust me, it’s much easier than you think. So, let’s dive in!

First things first, make sure you have a Raspberry Pi board ready to go. If you don’t have one yet, don’t worry. You can easily find one online or at your local electronics store. Once you have your board, we’re ready to get started.

Now, I’m going to show you how to install Kodi on your Raspberry Pi using a Linux-based operating system called OSMC. OSMC is simple to install and perfect for running Kodi on your Pi.

To begin, you need to download the OSMC installer for your computer’s operating system. Don’t worry, it’s available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Once you’ve downloaded the installer, run it, and you’ll see a simple wizard guiding you through the installation.

Next, select the Raspberry Pi model you have, as well as your desired language and region settings. This ensures that OSMC works seamlessly with your Pi and matches your preferences.

Once you’ve completed these initial steps, you’ll be prompted to choose where you want to install OSMC. Make sure you select your Raspberry Pi’s SD card as the installation destination. This is essential for the proper functioning of Kodi on your Pi.

After selecting your SD card, the installer will begin to download the necessary files and transfer them onto the card. This may take a few minutes, so be patient. Once the process is complete, you’ll be ready to connect your Raspberry Pi to your TV or monitor.

Insert the SD card into your Pi, power it up, and you’ll see the OSMC installer on your screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup. It’s straightforward and won’t take long at all.

Now, we’re almost there! OSMC will automatically install Kodi on your Raspberry Pi during the setup process. Once the installation is complete, you’ll see the Kodi home screen displayed on your TV or monitor.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed Kodi on your Raspberry Pi. Now, you have a world of entertainment at your fingertips. You can stream your favorite movies, TV shows, and music, all from the comfort of your own home.

Of course, there are many more things you can do with Kodi, like installing add-ons and customizing your media experience. But those are topics for another time. For now, enjoy exploring all the amazing features that Kodi offers on your Raspberry Pi.

So, why wait? Follow these steps, and in no time, you’ll be enjoying the wonders of Kodi on your own Raspberry Pi. Have fun and happy streaming!

How To Install Kodi on a Raspberry Pi

Kodi is amazing. It has all the features of XBMC but updated for today’s technology. It’s open source, works on any device, and is easy to install and customize. What’s not to love? If you want an affordable project that will give you a fully functional media center without breaking the bank, here’s how you can install Kodi on a Raspberry Pi.

As far as I know, Kodi will work on all versions of the Raspberry Pi. It might run better on the newer ones since they have better hardware. I’ve personally used a Raspberry Pi 3, so that’s the one I can tell you about. However, forums say Kodi works on the older versions too.

  • Raspberry Pi
  • An enclosure with a power supply
  • MicroSD card and adapter
  • HDMI cable
  • OSMC version of Kodi
  • USB keyboard
  • Computer with a MicroSD card reader

Once you have everything you need, we can get started.

Installing Kodi on a Raspberry Pi

To install Kodi on a Raspberry Pi, we need to download OSMC for the computer type you’re using. OSMC is a version of Kodi that’s easy to use for beginners. In my case, I used the Windows version, but there are versions for OS X and Linux too.

  1. Go to the OSMC website and download the image.
  2. Open the file on your computer, choose the language and Raspberry Pi version, and click the right arrow.
  3. Select the newest build version on the next window and click the right arrow.
  4. Choose the SD card as the destination media. Make sure the card is inserted into your computer.
  5. Set up wireless if you want to and click the right arrow.
  6. Check the settings and click the right arrow to confirm.
  7. Accept the EULA and click the right arrow.
  8. Wait for the installer to download and complete. You should see a congratulations message when it’s done.
  9. Insert the MicroSD card into the Raspberry Pi.
  10. Set up and connect all the necessary hardware.
  11. Turn on the Raspberry Pi and let it boot up. You should see the installation continue with a blue screen displaying OSMC in the center.
  12. Follow the prompts to configure the settings.
  13. Configure add-ons to add extra features if you want.

Once you’re done, you’ll see the dashboard with a menu on the left offering options like TV shows, movies, music, and more. That’s the basic installation of Kodi on your Raspberry Pi.

Kodi/OSMC will work fine right away with the default settings. However, one of the great things about this app is the vast number of configuration options available. You can leave everything as-is, or you can customize the app to your heart’s content. Add-ons are also customizable. You could easily spend hours experimenting with the settings, but it’s not required.

Using Kodi

The interface for Kodi isn’t super fancy, but it’s designed to be user-friendly. You can select media from the left menu or the center, depending on how you configure your interface.

First, you’ll probably want to install add-ons to expand the functionality of OSMC.

  1. Go to Settings, enable Expert Mode, and then go to Addons.
  2. Turn on Unknown Sources so you can add a wider range of add-ons.
  3. Go to File Manager and Add Source.
  4. Select and add the source URL. Make sure to include “http://” for a fully qualified address.
  5. Add your source URL, for example, “http://fusion.tvaddons.ag/”.
  6. Name it and click OK.
  7. Go back to Add-ons to see your new options.

There are many sources for add-ons, so you can do a Google search to find more.

  1. Select an add-on and browse or search until you find something you like.
  2. Select an add-on from the list and click Install on the next page. The add-on should automatically install and then appear in the main Add-ons page.
  3. Select that add-on to use or browse for more.

OSMC can be used without add-ons; you just need to select your desired media from the main menu.

If you have any issues with Kodi or OSMC, there’s a helpful community over at the Kodi forums. Almost every question imaginable has already been asked there, so you can browse through tutorials, how-to guides, and Q&A. If you can’t find the answer you need, don’t hesitate to ask. The community is friendly and always willing to help, as long as you’ve made an effort to find the answer yourself.
