But before we jump in, there are a few things you need to know. First, this feature is only available on iOS 10, so make sure you’ve updated your iPad to the latest version. Second, split view in Safari is only supported on certain iPad models. You’ll need an iPad mini 4 or newer, iPad Air 2, or either the 9.7-inch or 12.9-inch iPad Pro. And finally, split view for Safari only works when your iPad is in landscape mode, so don’t forget to check that your rotation isn’t locked to portrait.

As you get closer to the edge of the screen, the existing Safari window will move slightly to make space for the tab. When you see this happen, just release your finger. The dragged tab will open side-by-side with your current Safari window.

Merging & Closing Split View Tabs

If you have multiple tabs open in split view and you want to merge them back into a single full-screen window, hold down on the tab icon (Merge All Tabs).

To close tabs in split view, simply tap the “x” at the top left corner of the desired tab. If you close all the tabs on one side of the split view, Safari will switch back to full-screen mode, keeping the remaining tabs on the other side.

Safari Split View Keyboard Shortcut

If you use an external keyboard with your iPad, split view in Safari becomes even easier. Just press the Command-N shortcut from within the Safari app to open a new split view window – the same action as holding the tab icon and pressing “Open in Split View”.
Similarly, pressing Command-W will close the active tabs. If you use the keyboard to close all active tabs on one side of the split view, Safari will return to full-screen mode.
Please note that the shortcuts to cycle through the next and previous tabs (Control-Tab and Control-Shift-Tab) only work on the currently selected side of the split view. To use the keyboard to navigate through your tabs on one side of Safari split view, make sure to tap the screen on that side first to select it.

Oh my gosh! It’s unbelievable that iOS has finally made it possible to have two browser windows side by side! They are really light years ahead.
Of course, I was able to view Explorer next to Firefox, Firefox next to Chrome, Explorer next to Explorer, and so on, three years ago on my Windows tablet. And these were full browsers, not mobile versions. But let’s not take away from the greatness of iOS here. So, go iOS!
And the world keeps spinning, continually pouring all its efforts into iOS as if it’s the best thing since sliced bread… (?)
