The Mac Photos app has this cool feature called “Smart Albums.” They’re like saved searches that automatically update whenever you add new pictures to your library. Smart Albums are super useful for organizing your photos, especially if you have a ton of them. Every Mac user should definitely know about this feature. Okay, let’s dive in and learn how to use Smart Albums in Photos for Mac!

To create a Smart Album in Photos for Mac, start by opening the Photos app. Then, go to the top menu and select “File” and then “New Smart Album.” You can also use the keyboard shortcut “Option-Command-N.” A new window will pop up, and you can give your album a name and set some rules or “conditions” for the pictures you want it to include.

After you name your Smart Album, you can set the conditions for the photos you want to have in it. You have to create at least one condition, but if you want things to get fancy, you can add more conditions. To set your first condition, click on the first drop-down menu and choose the type of condition you want. It could be a keyword, a filename, a certain date or range of dates, or even the camera specifications. Once you pick something from the first drop-down, the other two will change based on your selection. You can add more conditions by clicking the plus icon or remove existing conditions by clicking the minus icon.

If you have multiple conditions for your Smart Album, you’ll be asked if you want to match “any” or “all” of them. This changes how the Smart Album filters your library. For example, in my screenshot, matching “any” of the conditions showed me pictures of myself and all my pictures from the last year, even the ones without me. If I had chosen “all” conditions, the Smart Album would only contain pictures of me taken in the last year. By the way, I have way too many selfies. It’s pretty clear from the number of results that search returned.

Smart Albums can come in handy in different ways. For example, you can use them to find images that won’t upload to your iCloud Photo Library. You can configure the Smart Album’s conditions to show you only those photos that couldn’t be uploaded to iCloud for some reason. Another great use of Smart Albums is to find the people you’ve identified using the facial recognition feature in Photos. You can create a Smart Album containing just members of your family, for example. If you’re into the technical aspects of photography, you can even create a Smart Album to find and sort images taken with a specific camera model. This lets you compare the image quality differences between your high-end DSLR and your new iPhone, for example.

Now, you might be wondering how to actually view your Smart Albums once you’ve created them. If you don’t have the Photos app sidebar turned on, you can click on “Albums” from the top menu bar or select it from the top drop-down menu. Your Smart Albums will appear in the list along with any manually curated albums you’ve created. If you have the sidebar on, you can use the “View” menu to show the sidebar, and then your Smart Albums will appear on the left.

I’ve found these Smart Albums to be incredibly helpful for sorting and finding all sorts of things. I’ve even used them to make adding images to projects like photo books or calendars a breeze. It’s so great to not have to organize everything manually!
