If you’re like me, you might have noticed that most of the apps and interface elements in Windows 10 have a bright gray color scheme. It gives Windows 10 a clean and modern look, but some of us prefer a darker appearance. We’ve seen this preference for dark themes in previous versions of Windows and even in OS X Yosemite. Unfortunately, there won’t be an official Windows 10 dark theme available when the operating system launches this week. But, if you’re an early adopter like me, you can still get a preview of Microsoft’s vision for a darker Windows aesthetic. All you need to do is make a small registry tweak. Let me show you how!

First, we need to open the Windows Registry Editor. You can do this by opening the Start Menu, typing “Run” into the search box, and clicking on the Run app. In the Run app, type “regedit” and click OK. Alternatively, you can simply search for “regedit” using Windows Search or Cortana.
In order to enable the Windows 10 dark theme, we need to make two registry entries. The first one can be found at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionThemesPersonalize

Hey there! Let me walk you through how to personalize your registry settings. First, we need to select the Personalize key from the left side of the window. Once you’ve got that, right-click in an empty area on the right side of the window. From the dropdown menu, choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Now, we need to give this new value a name. Let’s call it AppsUseLightTheme. After you’ve named it, set its value to “0” (zero). Remember, the value should be in quotes.

Great job so far! Now, it’s time to move on to the next step. We’ll need to navigate to a different location in the registry. Follow this path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize

Just a heads up, you might not have the “Personalize” option in your registry. If you don’t, you can easily create it. Just right-click on Themes, select New > Key, and name it Personalize.

Once you’ve done that, follow the previous steps to create a new DWORD value with the same name (AppsUseLightTheme). Make sure the value of your new DWORD is set to “0” (zero).

With these two changes made to your Windows 10 registry, simply save any open work and log out of Windows (open the Start Menu, click your user account at the top-left, and select Sign Out). When you log back in, open a default Windows 10 app, like the Settings app or the Calculator, and you’ll notice that the usual white/gray theme has been replaced with a dark gray theme.

Windows 10 Dark Theme Limitations

In the first paragraph, I used the word “incomplete” to describe the Windows 10 dark theme. As you navigate around the Windows 10 interface with the dark theme enabled, you’ll quickly see why “incomplete” is a fitting word. Currently, only certain Windows 10 apps are affected by the dark theme setting. Common apps like Mail, Calendar, and People maintain their “light theme” appearance. Even the apps that do adopt the dark theme have difficulties with fonts and buttons that are hard to see against the dark background. To make matters worse, the dark theme only works for the new “universal” apps; old desktop apps like File Explorer and Control Panel don’t change at all.

These limitations and drawbacks make the Windows 10 dark theme an interesting preview, but not something you’d want to use regularly, especially on a work or main system. However, with Microsoft’s commitment to frequent software updates, it’s likely that the dark theme will eventually become a user-accessible option in Settings.

Disable Windows 10 Dark Theme

When you’re done testing the Windows 10 dark theme in its current state, you can switch back to the default light theme. Just go back to the two registry locations mentioned earlier and either delete the two “AppsUseLightTheme” DWORD values or change their value to “1” (one). I suggest going with the second option because it makes it easier to re-enable the dark theme in the future if you want to keep track of its progress as Windows 10 updates after its launch. Just remember that whenever you modify the Windows 10 theme settings through the registry, you’ll need to log out of your user account and log back in to see the changes take effect.
