And let me tell you, TiVo has offered online content in the past, but this is their most seamless and ambitious push for a “source-agnostic” experience yet. That’s why they’ve given it the fancy name of “Unified Entertainment Center.”

While the overall experience of using the TiVo Bolt will feel familiar to those who have used a TiVo before, there are some new and exciting features to look forward to.

For starters, the TiVo Bolt supports a whole bunch of online services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, Vudu, Yahoo, Plex, Spotify, Pandora, and more. You can access these services using TiVo’s integrated “apps.” They’re always updating and adding new sources, so you can expect the list to keep growing.

One of my favorite features is OneSearch. Just type in the name of a show, movie, actor, director, or even some keywords, and TiVo OneSearch will show you all the results from all your available sources. So, if you’re in the mood to watch Pulp Fiction, TiVo Bolt will let you know that you can catch it on HBO at the end of the week or watch it right away on Netflix.

And then there’s OnePass. You might already be familiar with TiVo’s Season Pass feature, which would automatically find and record all the episodes of your favorite show. Well, OnePass takes it a step further. It not only finds and records episodes from your local TV package, but it also includes episodes available for streaming through subscription services or even for purchase through video download services. With OnePass, you can catch all your favorite shows, no matter where they’re available.

So, if cutting the cord isn’t an option for you, maybe slimming the cord with the TiVo Bolt is. SkipMode: SkipMode is a cool feature that takes commercial skipping to a whole new level on TiVo. With SkipMode, you can skip an entire block of commercials with just one press of a button. But there are some important things to know about SkipMode on the TiVo Bolt. First, it only works with certain content and networks that support it. Not all networks and shows are on board with SkipMode. Currently, about 20 channels offer SkipMode support between 4:00 p.m. and midnight, excluding local TV and sports. Second, even for networks that do support SkipMode, you have to wait some time, usually around 30 minutes, after the live program airs before it will work.

Performance Improvements: The TiVo Bolt is way faster than its predecessors. It’s 3 times faster, to be exact. Everything from booting up to navigating menus to searching for and scheduling recordings is so much quicker. The TiVo Bolt also has some great technical features, like support for CableCard and over-the-air sources, four tuners, and 4K video output. It has a bunch of connectivity options too, like Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB ports, and an eSATA port for external storage drives.

There are two storage capacity options for the TiVo Bolt: 500GB and 1TB. You can also get additional storage from third-party providers. The Bolt is smaller and lighter than previous models, measuring 11.4 inches wide, 7.3 inches deep, and 1.8 inches tall, and weighing 1.9 pounds.

When you start using the TiVo Bolt, the first thing you’ll notice is how fast it is. It’s super fast! The user interface is quick and responsive, and searches happen in a flash. Unlike other DVRs, the Bolt doesn’t lag or slow down. Plus, the unified search feature is amazing. It pulls results from the TV guide, your recordings, and all your streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. It’s all in one place, which makes finding what you want so easy.

The integration of channel content and streamed content is also really cool. The Bolt’s OnePass feature lets you find and stream episodes from various streaming services. You can even set it up to show you where you can watch episodes for free or for a small fee. It’s a great way to keep track of all your shows and find them easily.

Using the Bolt is pretty intuitive, although there is a bit of a learning curve if you’re used to a different DVR. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll love the experience. The TiVo interface is different, but in a good way. It’s user-friendly and everyone in the family can pick it up quickly.

There are a couple of small issues with the TiVo Bolt, though. The parental controls could be better, and some of the menus don’t wrap around, so you have to scroll through all the options to get to the top or bottom. But overall, the TiVo Bolt is a great DVR with lots of features and improvements.

TiVo Bolt Accessories

Just like other DVR services, TiVo offers a range of accessories to enhance your TiVo experience at home and on the go.

So, here’s the deal with the TiVo Mini ($138) – it’s like a key that unlocks a whole bunch of video options for your entire house. All you need to do is get the Mini and set up a video zone. There’s no need for an extra subscription, just buy the device and you’re good to go. You can connect it to your home network using either a wired Ethernet connection or MoCA. If you have a coax cable but no Ethernet, don’t worry, you can still use the Mini. The only downside is that it doesn’t support Wi-Fi, so if you’re used to wireless options from Dish or AT&T, you might be disappointed. But hey, no need to fret – we found a way around it. We managed to get it up and running using a pair of 500MB Powerline Ethernet adapters with no issues at all. Surprisingly, we couldn’t tell the difference between the Mini connected via direct wired or powerline wired. So, we figured out a way to bring TV to a spot in your home that doesn’t have wired Ethernet or Coax – and it only costs an extra $35.

Now, let’s talk money. Most cable and satellite companies charge you a monthly fee for additional boxes like the Mini. Dish calls them Joeys, and they can set you back anywhere from $8 to $12 per month. But with the Mini, there’s no extra monthly cost at all. Let’s say the average monthly fee is $10 – well, you’ll break even on the Mini after around 14 months. Just keep in mind that the Bolt, which is the main TiVo device, only has four tuners. That means there’s a limit to the number of Minis you can add and use at the same time. There are rumors that TiVo is working on a solution that will allow for multiple Bolts to work together and share recordings, but we haven’t got any solid info on that yet.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. We found out that our local Amazon Prime Now store sells both the TiVo Mini and the powerline Ethernet adapters. And guess what? We were able to set up a new video zone in less than three hours – from the moment we thought, “Hey, can we watch TV here?” to actually watching TV in that spot. It was smooth sailing all the way – no need for an installer, no need to call tech support. It was honestly pretty cool and hassle-free.

TiVo Stream is a nifty device that lets you access your Bolt recordings and tuners from anywhere in the world. It’s similar to a Slingbox, in case you’re familiar with that. If you already have a Slingbox, you probably don’t need a TiVo Stream. But if you don’t have a Slingbox and want to watch TV outside of your home, TiVo Stream is perfect for you. However, there are some limitations to keep in mind. According to a Q&A on Amazon, “it allows out of home streaming, but only if the content provider allows it.” Sadly, the major networks like ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, Viacom (Comedy Central, MTV), and Discovery (TLC, Science) all block streaming. This means that the TiVo Stream cannot stream or transfer shows from these networks to another device.

Conclusion

TiVo is pretty amazing. If you’re looking to cut the cord or slim down your cable package, it’s a fantastic option that doesn’t sacrifice usability or user experience. I will admit, there is a decent upfront cost to get the TiVo Stream, but in the long run, you’ll save a significant amount of money on your monthly service bills. It may take about a year to break even, but after that, it’s all smooth sailing. Just think about all the cool home theater gear you could buy with that extra money!
