How to Use Snapchat Filters

How to Use Snapchat Filters

Hey there! So, you want to take your selfie game to the next level? Well, lucky for you, Snapchat has got your back. They’ve got tons of filters and photo editing tools that can turn your ordinary picture into something seriously cool. The only downside? It can be a bit overwhelming to figure out how to use them all. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate through all those Snapchat options.

Selfie Filters

Let’s start with the silliest of Snapchat’s filter options – the selfie filters. These are what make Snapchat so much fun! To find and use these filters, just follow these simple steps:

  1. First, tap on that little icon in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. This will flip the camera around so you can see yourself on the screen.
  2. Once you’re looking at your beautiful face, tap anywhere on it to bring up the filter options. You’ll see a bunch of circles along the bottom of the screen – those are the filters!
  3. Now, just swipe through the options until you find the one you like best. Try them all out!
  4. Finally, when you’ve found the perfect filter, tap on the circle at the bottom of the screen to snap a pic. Voila! You’re done.

Filters can be unpredictable. They change regularly, and some are even supported by different organizations. But there are also filters that remain popular and stay around for a longer period of time, like the doggie face filter.

What’s really interesting is that some filters come with extra tricks. You might get instructions to raise your eyebrows or stick out your tongue, and if you follow them, something unexpected will happen!

So, here’s a cool idea: why not try out a filter that you really like, and then switch the camera back so that you’re facing yourself? It’s a neat little trick that will totally change up the reality around you, adding some fun surprises and giving your photo a unique twist.

Enhancing Your Photos with Filters

After you’ve taken a photo on Snapchat, you can also experiment with different filters to edit its appearance. These filters are super easy to find, although they can be a bit annoying to navigate through. All you have to do is swipe left on your photo after taking it, but before sharing it with others. Just keep swiping to discover more filter options. Here are some examples of what you might come across:

  • Color filters – These filters change the appearance of your photo, adding gloss, sepia, overly saturated, or black & white effects.
  • Speed – This filter shows how fast you were going when the photo was taken.
  • Temp – This filter displays the current temperature at the time and location the photo was taken.
  • Altitude – This filter reveals the altitude above sea level where the picture was taken.
  • Time – This filter shows the exact time when the photo was taken.
  • Location – This filter might display the name of a city, state, or country where the photo was taken.
  • Special days – You might see some filters specific to special holidays or other calendar events.

As I cycle through the filters, simply tap on the screen for additional options. Some filters will change style or format when tapped on.

If you want your picture to return to normal, just swipe to the end of the filters. If you swipe through all of them, the next swipe will show your original image.

Photo Editing Tools

If you’re not happy with the available filter options, you can always edit your photo using Snapchat’s extensive photo editing tools. Take a look at our crash course below, but don’t be afraid to have some fun and experiment. Snapchat is always full of surprises.

The photo editing options are located on the right-hand side of the screen after you take a photo.

  • T – This option allows you to add text to your photo. Simply type using your phone’s keypad. You can change the color of the text by using the color bar on the right. You can also adjust the size and format of the text by tapping on it.
  • Pencil – Use this option to draw on your photo. Use your finger to draw and change the color using the color bar on the right. You can adjust the size of the pen by pinching and pulling on the screen with your fingers.
  • Sticker – Add stickers to your photo. Tap through the row of icons at the bottom of the screen for more sticker options. Once you choose a sticker, you can change its size by using the pinch and pull gesture. To remove a sticker, simply tap and drag it to the trash. You can still add the same sticker later if you want.
  • Scissors – This icon opens up additional editing options (see below).

Scissor editing options:

  • Sticker – Copy and paste parts of your photo to create custom stickers. Trace the portion you want to copy with your finger, and a sticker will appear. Resize it and remove it like any other sticker. Whether you remove it or not, the sticker will be saved for later use in your custom sticker inventory (accessible through the Sticker icon).
  • Stars – This is your magic eraser. Use your finger to drag across the parts of your image that you want to remove.
  • Grid – Add a pattern to your picture. The pattern overlays the original image. Trace around the portions of your image that you want to bring to the foreground.
  • Paint Brush – This tool allows you to fill an object with a specific color. Select a color and trace the object you want to color. The color fill tool will do the rest.

Save it For Later

Not sure how to make your picture stand out? No problem. Tap the save icon in the lower left-hand corner to save your photo. You can access it later in the Memories section. You’ll have all the same editing options and most of the same filter options available to you.
