Checking Your TV and App Subscriptions – It’s Important!

The list of things we need to take care of keeps growing. The bills keep piling up, from paying for movie services and in-app purchases to yoga sessions and learning new skills. After the New Year celebrations, it’s a good idea to do something that will improve your financial situation. And one way to do that is by reviewing and monitoring your monthly and weekly subscriptions.

For a few years now, I’ve made it a point to keep tabs on how much I’m spending. It helps me determine if every financial decision I’ve made was worth it. For instance, if I signed up for a gym class and lost interest or if my HBO Now subscription is no longer worth it because my favorite series has ended (for now).

It’s always good to sit down, reflect, and reevaluate once in a while. That includes deciding what to stop paying for and what to continue with. Taking a closer look at your subscription list is one of those things you should definitely do this New Year. If you want to know how to do it, I’ll explain below.

How to Check and Cancel Your App Subscriptions

The easiest way to check your app subscriptions is on your Apple device. You can use your iPhone or iPad. Alternatively, you can go through iTunes on your Mac.

  1. Find the App Store app and open it.
  2. Tap on your Profile Photo in the upper right corner.
  3. You’ll need to authorize your account (using your password, Touch ID, or Face ID).
  4. Scroll down and tap on Subscriptions.

This will show you all your current and past subscriptions.

  • If you have an active app subscription, you’ll see “Renews [date]” under the subscription type.
  • If you’ve canceled a subscription but it hasn’t expired yet, you’ll see “Expires [date]” under the subscription type.
  • When a subscription has completely expired, it will appear at the bottom of your screen under the “Expired” option. You can also renew expired subscriptions anytime by selecting the subscription option and choosing a new plan.

How to Check for Other Subscriptions

Unnecessary App Store subscriptions might not be the only thing you need to address this year. There are also other subscriptions, like games, movies, and donation services.

Checking these services can be a bit tricky, but I’ll explain a couple of ways to make it easier.

Option 1: Check Your Credit Card Statement

To make it easier for me to keep track of my expenses, I always make sure that all my bills are automatically deducted from a credit card. If you’re using multiple credit cards to pay bills, you should consider consolidating them. This will reduce charges and make it easier for you to manage your monthly subscriptions.

Option 2: Use a Finance Tool like Mint

Whether you use a single card or multiple cards to pay for your subscriptions, there are apps and services, like Mint, that can automatically organize your monthly and yearly expenses. This will help you see where your money is going each month.

Once you set up your account with apps like Mint, you’ll be able to keep track of your recurring bills more easily, making it a breeze to find them in the future.
