A Guide to Windows 10 File Explorer

File Explorer is a very important part of Windows 10. It’s a tool that helps you manage all your folders and the files inside them. So, if you want to open software or files in Windows 10, you’ll probably need to open File Explorer, unless you have desktop shortcuts for them. Microsoft has made some changes to the Windows 10 File Explorer.

To open File Explorer, simply click on the folder icon on the taskbar. This will open a window that looks like the one in the picture below. At the top of the window, you’ll see the Ribbon tabs, which offer a lot of options. There’s also the Quick Access Toolbar and the address bar. On the left side, there’s a new Quick Access list that shows folders and files that you’ve recently accessed. The contents of the folders are displayed on the right side of the Quick Access panel.

To navigate through the folders, just click on the ones you want on the right side. Want to go back to the root directory? Easy! Just click the Up arrow on the address bar. Once you’re there, you can continue navigating through the folders. If you’re looking for a specific folder or file, simply enter their titles in the File Explorer search box to find them quickly.

The Handy Quick Access Sidebar

One of the new and noteworthy features in File Explorer is the Quick Access sidebar, which replaces the old Favorites sidebar on the left side of the window. It’s a convenient way to access recently opened folders. And guess what? You can also pin your favorite folders to the Quick Access sidebar.

Here’s how to pin a folder to Quick Access: simply right-click on a folder icon in File Explorer. This will open a context menu, as shown in the snapshot below. From there, select the option “Pin to Quick Access” and voila! The folder will be pinned to the sidebar for easy access.

If you want to remove folders from Quick access, all you need to do is right-click on their icons on the sidebar. From there, just select the option that says “Unpin from Quick access” and the folder will be removed from the sidebar.

Let’s talk about the File Explorer Ribbon

The File Explorer Ribbon is where you’ll find most of the options for File Explorer. To access these options, simply click on the Home, View, or Share tabs on the Ribbon toolbar. If you click on the Home tab, you’ll see the toolbar appear below.

Hey there! Let me break down this toolbar for you. It’s got all the important options you’ll need when working with files and folders in File Explorer. Here, you’ve got the Copy to, Move to, Delete, and Rename options at your fingertips. These let you copy, move, delete, and edit titles of files and folders. And if you prefer, you can also access these options by right-clicking on a folder or file.

Now, when you select a folder or file and hit the Delete button on the Home tab, it simply moves it to the Recycle Bin. But, to really get rid of it, you’ll have to take an extra step and empty the Recycle Bin. You can do this by right-clicking on the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and selecting Empty Recycle Bin from the menu that pops up.

Let’s talk about the Share tab. It’s not as crucial, but it does come with options for sharing documents and folders. And now, it even has a Share button on it! This button lets you select an app to share your selected document with, right from the file manager itself. Just pick a document, click the Share button, and choose the app you want from the list that shows up.

Finally, we have the View tab. It’s got some really useful customization options for File Explorer. For instance, you can tweak the icon sizes to your liking. And if you want to organize your file and folder lists, you can simply click on Sort by and choose how you want them sorted: by type, name, date, tags, and more.

One more useful feature on that tab is Item check boxes. When you choose that option, checkboxes will appear that you can click to select multiple folders and files. This means you can select many files and folders without having to hold down the Ctrl key.

By default, the Libraries folder is not shown on the File Explorer sidebar. But don’t worry, you can easily add it to the sidebar. Just go to the View tab and select Navigation pane. Then click on Show libraries and the folder will be added to the sidebar.

The Quick Access Toolbar

I want to talk about this thing called the Quick Access Toolbar. You can find it at the tippity-top left corner of your File Explorer window. It’s kinda cool because it has shortcuts to different options on the Ribbon toolbar. And guess what? You can even customize it to make it your very own! Just give that small down arrow a little press, and voila, a menu will magically pop up right in front of your eyes. Take a look at the picture below to see what I mean.

Hey there! Let me break it down for you. The menu has a few choices that you can add or remove from the Quick Access Toolbar. If you see an option that is not already selected, just click on it to add it to the toolbar. On the flip side, if you want to get rid of an option that is already selected, simply click on it and it will be removed from the QAT.

Oh, and here’s a cool tip: you can also add some extra options to the toolbar specifically for the Recycle Bin. However, these options are not available in the menu I mentioned earlier. You can add three different options – Empty Recycle Bin, Restore All Items, and Recycle Bin properties. Just click on the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop to open it up and access these options.

If you want to make some changes in your File Explorer, follow these steps. First, click on the Manage tab. A list of options will appear below. To add the Empty Recycle Bin option to your Quick Access Toolbar, you need to right-click on the button in the Manage tab. This will open a menu with different choices. From that menu, select Add to Quick Access Toolbar. The option will then be added to your Toolbar, just like that! You can do the same with most of the other options on the Ribbon of File Explorer.

file explorer6Opening Folders in New Windows and Command Prompt

Another cool trick is opening folders in new File Explorer windows. To do this, go to the File tab. From there, select the folder you want to open. Then, click on File and choose Open new window from the menu that appears. If you prefer using your keyboard, you can simply press Ctrl + N, and a new window will open. Pretty handy, right?

Hey there! Did you know that you can easily open a folder in Command Prompt directly from File Explorer? It’s super handy! Just follow these steps:

  1. Select the folder you want to open.
  2. Click on the Open command prompt option in the menu above.
  3. Voila! The selected folder will open in the Command Prompt’s window. You can also choose to open it in PowerShell if you prefer.

Cool File Explorer Shortcuts

Now, let’s talk about some nifty keyboard shortcuts for File Explorer. These shortcuts can make your life a lot easier! To find them, simply hover your cursor over a button on the Ribbon toolbar. A small text box will pop up, showing you any keyboard shortcuts associated with that button. Pretty neat, huh?

If you’re looking to navigate the File Explorer more efficiently, I’ve got a few keyboard shortcuts that you’ll find quite handy. Let’s dive in!

First off, if you want to move up or go back a folder in your folder tree, simply hold down the Alt key and press the up arrow key. It’s that easy! And if you want to go back in your folder history, just press Alt + the left arrow key. These shortcuts will save you some valuable time and effort.

But wait, there’s more! Did you know that there are hotkeys to quickly open and close File Explorer? To open a new File Explorer window, simply press Win + E. It’s a quick and efficient way to access your files. And if you want to close File Explorer, just press Alt + F4. It’s as simple as that.

Now, let’s talk about copying files. Copying and pasting files is a breeze in File Explorer. To copy a selected file, just press Ctrl + C. Then, to paste it into another folder, simply press Ctrl + V. It’s a super convenient way to duplicate files without any hassle.

Lastly, let me introduce you to the preview pane. It’s a fantastic option in File Explorer that allows you to get a preview of image or document files without fully opening them. Just click on a file to preview it, and if you want a closer look, press Alt + P to open a preview for it. And don’t worry, if you want to switch the preview option off, simply press Alt + P again. It’s the perfect feature for quickly checking out files without opening them one by one.

When it comes to Windows 10, there’s no denying that File Explorer is one of the most important tools. It’s a handy way to navigate through your files and folders, and it has some pretty cool features too. In this guide, I’ll be showing you the built-in options that File Explorer offers. But keep in mind, you can also personalize File Explorer even more by using additional third-party software or making changes to the registry.
