When it comes to making us smile, nothing does it quite like GIFs. Whether it’s adorable pets or famous people doing something funny, these short animations have become a staple in our online conversations. I’m sure you’ve used a GIF or two to respond to someone’s message in the past.
But here’s the thing: playing a GIF on your Mac isn’t always as straightforward as you might think. Some people might argue that Apple doesn’t handle GIFs very well, but don’t worry. There are a couple of quick and easy ways to play a GIF on your Mac without needing any special apps.
The Fastest Method
If you want to play a GIF as quickly and easily as possible on your Mac, I’ve got you covered. Here’s what you need to do: go to the location where the GIF is saved, click on it, and then hold down the Space bar on your keyboard. A new window will open, and the GIF will start playing right away.
Hey there! Want to make the most of your GIF viewing experience? I’ve got some cool tips for you!
First things first, you can totally go big and view your GIF in full-screen mode. Just click/tap on the handy little two arrows button, and bam! You’ve got a supersized GIF right in front of you.
But wait, there’s more! If you want to share your awesome GIF with friends and family, you can do that too! See that share icon on the right? Go ahead and click on it. From there, you can send your GIF through AirDrop, Email, or iMessages. And it doesn’t stop there! You can even assign the share feature to other apps by clicking on ‘More’.
Now, let’s say you want to dive a little deeper into your GIF. Well, my friend, I’ve got just the option for you! Open that GIF in the Preview app and get ready to be amazed. The animation will automatically open in Preview when you click on it. But hold on, you won’t be able to play the GIF inside Preview. Instead, you’ll be greeted with all its thumbnails – those little images that make up the GIF. To check out or hide those images, just click/tap on the small play icon in Preview.
The Browser Method
If, for any reason, the Space bar isn’t functioning, you can watch the GIF directly in your browser. Right-click or use a two-finger tap on the GIF to access a menu with additional options. Choose “Open with” and select Safari. We attempted this method with Chrome, but it was unsuccessful. However, if you succeed in using a different browser, please leave us a comment to let us know.
When playing a GIF in Safari, there is one minor downside. The animation stops as soon as it plays out, and you need to refresh the page to see it again. However, if you use the Space bar method, the GIF will play in an infinite loop.
How to Make a GIF on a Mac
Instead of just playing a GIF, you may want to create a custom one from your videos. To do this, it’s best to use third-party apps. There are many free and easy-to-use options available, and I’ve selected a few that you might find interesting.
Gifrocket
This app specifically works with videos. There are a few settings you need to adjust to create a GIF. Set the intro and outro times, adjust the video size in pixels, and move the slider to the right for better quality. Hit enter and your GIF will be ready in a moment.
GIPHY Capture
GIPHY Capture is different from most other tools because it creates GIFs from screen recordings. Once you launch the app, click to start recording and click again to stop. Then, you can move on to the editing menu to enhance your video.
Among other things, you can set different loop types – ping-pong, normal, or reverse. There’s an option to create a caption and export the GIF at HD frame rate.
Smart GIF Maker
Smart GIF Maker is yet another handy tool with a user-friendly interface. It is free to use, but you can make in-app purchases to remove the watermark. This is a worthwhile purchase, as the app gives you a lot of flexibility when it comes to editing.
The app breaks the video into individual frames, and you can adjust each one to your preferences. Then, you set the delay time between the frames and choose the number of loops. Click on Preview to see if you’re happy with the end result, and then select Export to get your GIF.
Fun Facts and Stats
GIF is one of the oldest digital formats, invented way back in 1987. Some thought it wouldn’t last because other formats like PNG offer better image quality. However, what sets GIFs apart is their animation.
According to Giphy, their website serves 2 billion GIFs per day, and 300 million people use the website every day.
Hit Space to Play the Loop
In the world of digital image formats, GIF is seen as a dinosaur. But despite its age, GIFs are here to stay. People keep finding new and creative ways to use them, not just for entertainment, but also for advertisement purposes. There’s hardly a better way to catch someone’s attention than with short flashy animations.
