Learn the Magic Trick: Say Goodbye to the Green Screen in Videos
Let me show you how to perform a little bit of wizardry and make that pesky green screen disappear from your videos. With a few simple steps, you’ll be able to transform your footage into a seamless masterpiece. So, let’s dive in!
First things first, we need to gather our magical tools. To cast this spell, you’ll need a video editing software that supports chroma keying. This mystical feature allows us to obliterate the green screen and replace it with whatever background we desire. So make sure you have one of these software conjurers at your disposal.
Once your software is ready, load up your video footage and select the clip that holds the secret of the green screen. Now, take a deep breath and prepare yourself for the enchantment that is about to unfold.
The next step is to reveal the secret ingredient: the chroma key effect. This mystical power resides within the video editing software and can be found in the effects menu. Once you’ve summoned it, apply the effect to your chosen clip and watch the magic unfold.
Now, it’s time to choose the color that will be banished from our footage. Usually, it’s the green hue that we want to bid farewell. With a wave of your virtual wand, select the green color and watch as it transforms into a transparent void, leaving room for the enchanting background to take its place.
But wait, there may be some lingering traces of green around the edges that escaped our initial incantation. Fear not! We have another trick up our sleeve. Enter the world of feathering, where we can soften those harsh edges and blend our subject seamlessly into the new realm. Adjust the feathering settings until your subject looks like it belongs in their newfound surroundings.
Now, take a moment to marvel at your creation. The green screen has vanished, and in its place, a world of possibilities opens up. You can transport your subject to any location, be it a distant galaxy or a tropical paradise. With a little imagination, the possibilities are endless.
But remember, my dear apprentice, great power comes with great responsibility. Don’t let your newfound mastery of green screen removal overshadow the importance of storytelling and composition. Use this enchanting tool wisely and let it enhance your videos, rather than overshadowing their true magic.
So, my fellow sorcerer, go forth and let your videos transcend the ordinary. Remove the shackles of the green screen and unleash your imagination onto the world. With a little bit of magic and a sprinkle of creativity, who knows what wonders you will create? Happy editing!
Back in the day, filmmakers were the ones who primarily used the green screen. But now, it’s become popular among YouTubers and gamers too. It used to be that only experts in video editing could remove the green screen from a video. But today, even beginners can easily learn how to do it.
To make your life easier, try to make sure your green screen is flat and smooth when you’re recording. This way, you won’t have to spend as much time fixing it later on. If you’re using a computer with Windows, the VSDCC Video Editor is a great choice. If you’re using a Mac, go with iMovie.
VSDC
The reason why I recommend VSDC is because it’s a free video editor that has a tool specifically for removing the green screen. Just remember that for the free version of VSDC, you can only use a solid green background. Here’s a simple guide on how to remove the green screen using the VSDC Video Editor.
1. Getting rid of the Background
Let’s start by adding the video you want to work with to the timeline. Just drag it from its folder and drop it on the left-side menu. Now, go to Video Effects in the top menu, select Transparency from the dropdown, and choose Background Remover. Click OK. The green background in the video should now be removed, leaving it black. If the green background is still there, go to the right-side menu, select Chromakey color, use the eyedropper tool, and click on the green area of your video.
2. Removing any Remaining Green
If the green background is completely gone, you can proceed to the next step. If there are still some green spots, go to the right-side menu and find these settings: Minimum brightness threshold, Maximum chromaticityU threshold, and Maximum chromaticityV threshold. You can start by increasing all three settings at once. If that doesn’t work, you can adjust them manually until the remaining green spots disappear.
3. Adding a Picture/Video to Replace the Green Screen
Now, it’s time to replace the green screen with a desired photo or video. Simply drag and drop the photo/video onto the black space where the green screen used to be. Click on the original video, select Choose Order, and then One layer up. This will bring the video to the foreground, with the photo/video placed behind it.
iMovie
iMovie is a free app from Apple that allows you to use either a green screen or a blue screen to feature another photo or video. It offers more options compared to the VSDC Video Editor mentioned above. Here’s how you can remove the green/blue screen from a video using iMovie.
1. Adding a Green Screen Video
First, import a clip into the iMovie app. Then, use the timeline to select the clip or range that was shot against a blue or green backdrop. Drag the selection and hover it above the original clip. Wait for the green Add icon (+) to appear, then release the mouse button. Look for video overlay controls and click the Video Overlay Settings button.
2. Editing the Green Screen Video
In the viewer section, you will see that the clip shot against the green/blue background has had the green/blue removed and replaced with the clip you chose. You can reposition the green or blue screen clip, move it to a different spot, adjust its length, or place it on another clip. Once you are satisfied with the result, click Apply to apply the changes.
Next, you can use the Video Overlay Settings to make further adjustments such as softening the edges, cropping specific areas, or cleaning up any issues with the chromakey video. Don’t forget to click Apply in the Green/Blue Screen controls section to save the changes you made.
Troubleshooting
If you notice wrinkles on the green screen video, you might need a smoother green/blue surface or you can try editing the video to improve its appearance. Keep in mind that the quality of the green/blue backdrop should match the quality of the camera used for recording to achieve the best results.

Other Software
The two tools I mentioned earlier are free and useful, but there are also paid tools that can help you remove the green/blue screen and provide more options for a smoother user experience. For example, Adobe After Effects lets you automatically smoothen out the green screen with the Edge Feather tool. On the other hand, Camtasia, a popular video editing tool among YouTubers, lets you choose the color you want to remove, giving you even more options.
Green Screen Videos
Green screens are really trendy right now, especially since there are free video editing tools available that let you remove and edit composite videos. Of course, you can get more detailed if you want, but if you’re not aiming for perfection, VSDC and iMovie will do the job just fine.
