How to Invite Your Google Classroom to a Google Meet

Google Classroom is like a virtual classroom and Google Meet is like a virtual meeting room. But if you want to have a successful online class, it’s best to use both of them together. In the past, this was a difficult process that took a lot of time.

But luckily, Google Classroom recently added a feature that integrates with Google Meet. This feature makes it easy for you to create a new Google Meet link that everyone in your class can see.

Using these tools together makes online teaching even more convenient. If you want to learn how to use this new feature, keep reading.

Create a Unique Meet Link

To invite your entire Google Classroom to a Google Meet, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Google Classroom.
  2. Open one of your classes.
  3. Click the “Settings” button on the top-right of the screen.
  4. Look for the “Meet” option in the “General” section.

  5. Select “Generate Meet Link”.
    generate meet link

This will create the Google Meet link for your entire Google Classroom.

However, your students won’t be able to see the Meet link right away. If you want to prepare some materials before your students join the Meet room, you can turn off the “Visible for Students” option.

When you’re ready to show the link to your whole class, just turn the option back on. The link will appear on the main page of your chosen class, right below the class name.

Everyone in the class will see the link. They can click on it to go to the Google Meet, where you can have a live lesson or a regular class meeting.

What’s So Good About This Integration?

Of course, you can always use Google Meet without using Google Classroom. But this integration lets you invite the entire class without having to invite each student individually.

But the most important thing is that you can’t join the Meet room unless I’m in it.

So, if you click the meet link before me, you’ll get a message saying the link doesn’t work. Only when I start using the Meet link, will you be able to enter the room.

Also, once I generate the link and make it visible, it will stay on the Classroom home screen for as long as I want. There’s no need to repeat the process every time.

How can I Remove Students from Meet?

You should make sure that all students leave before I end the class. That way, I’ll make sure that nobody misuses or mishandles the data from our meeting room.

You can wait for all students to leave (the program will let me know when someone joins or leaves), or you can remove them manually. If you choose the second option, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Select the “People” option at the top right corner of the screen.
  2. Click the down arrow next to the student.
  3. Select the “Remove” button under that student’s card.

Once all the students have left, I can disconnect too.

Inviting a Guest Speaker or Another Teacher

Sometimes, I may want (or need) to invite people who are not members of our class to the Meet. If I use this integration, only members of our classroom will be able to see it. Instead of adding those individuals to our class, I can simply copy the Meet link from the “Settings” menu.

  1. Follow steps 1-5 from the first section to generate the meet link.
  2. Click the arrow next to the generated link.
  3. Select “Copy”.

I can easily share that link with anyone to make them join the meeting room.

If I want to prevent these users from joining the same room in the future, I can conveniently reset the Meet link.

Follow steps 1-2 from above and select “Reset Link” instead of “Copy”. It will automatically change for all our classroom members as well.

It’s Time for the Class Meeting!

With this new integration, conducting online classes is easier than ever. With one click, I can gather all of you in one virtual space and teach you as if we were in person.

Also, I can easily keep track of who’s attending and who’s not, invite guest speakers and spectators, or remove users with just one click.

Just be careful when sharing the Meet link outside of our classroom. If I don’t want other users to join in, I should restart the link every now and then.
