How to fix the ‘There was a problem parsing the package’ error in Android
Android has become the top mobile operating system, offering security, reliability, and quality apps. It also provides freedom to app developers and phone users. That’s why Android is so popular.
However, Android is not without its issues. One common problem is the parse error, which has been troubling Android users since its release. This error occurs when trying to install an app and can seem random. A parse error happens when Android can’t process the source file, and it can be caused by various reasons, such as a corrupt file, broken download, incompatibility, unauthorized changes to the file, or even a permissions issue within the phone itself.
No matter the reason, I’m here to help you fix it.
Step-by-step guide to fix the ‘There was a problem parsing the package’ error in Android
First, let’s make sure your phone is able to install the file. I am using Android Marshmallow, but if you have a different version, look for a similar option in your settings. Marshmallow brought many changes, including menu positioning and naming.
- Go to the Settings menu on your device.
- Select Applications.
- Check the box next to ‘Unknown sources.’ Keep in mind that enabling this option exposes your device to potential malware if you’re not careful about what you install.
- Try installing the app again that gave you the error.
In most cases, enabling Unknown sources solves the problem. However, once you have successfully installed the app, it’s a good idea to disable this setting. It’s one way malware can find its way onto your device. If enabling Unknown sources didn’t work, try these additional steps. Test each one and attempt to install the app after each step. If it installs correctly, there is no need to proceed to the next step.
- Disable the antivirus on your phone and try the installation again. Just be cautious about what you’re installing while your device remains unprotected. Remember to re-enable the antivirus once the installation is complete.
- Download the file again in case there was file corruption and try the installation again.
- Check the compatibility between the app and your Android version. This information should be mentioned somewhere on the app’s page.
Enable USB debugging
USB debugging is primarily meant for app developers, but some Android users have found that enabling debugging can fix the error. It’s worth a try if the previous steps didn’t work for you.
- Go to the Settings menu on your device.
- Select Developer options and enable USB debugging.
- Retry installing the app.
If USB debugging doesn’t resolve the error, and after checking the APK manifest file, there’s little else you can do. Unfortunately, it means you won’t be able to install that version of the app on your current Android version. Hopefully, it won’t come to that though.
