Hey there! So, here’s the deal: if you’re a cord-cutter with an Amazon Fire TV device, you might have noticed that you can’t stream directly from Amazon. But don’t worry, there are other streaming services you can use to watch all your favorite shows.

Now, up until recently, Fire TV was compatible with pretty much every streaming platform out there, except for YouTube TV. But guess what? After more than two years since YouTube TV was released, it’s finally available on most Fire TV devices!

In this article, I’ll give you a rundown of the history between Google and Amazon, tell you what you can expect from YouTube TV, and show you how to set it up on your Fire TV Stick.

What’s the deal with YouTube TV?

YouTube TV is Google’s official streaming platform, launched back in 2017. It’s got a whopping 70+ television networks, including big names like ABC, CBS, Disney, AMC, and Discovery, just to name a few. In other words, it’s a pretty solid alternative to cable TV.

And get this: YouTube TV also offers local TV stations, lets you stream on up to 3 devices at once, and gives you unlimited DVR storage. That means you can record shows and save them on special Cloud storage for up to 9 months and watch them whenever you want!

But here’s the thing: this service comes at a price. The monthly subscription is $50, which might be a bit too steep for some folks. I mean, if you already pay that much just for internet, it might be too much for your budget. Especially when you can get both internet and television packages from most cable providers for the price of one service.

But hey, YouTube TV does have some great features, like top-rated channels and unlimited DVR storage, which is better than what a lot of other streaming platforms offer. Plus, its interface is super user-friendly and has some handy features too.

So, why wasn’t YouTube TV available on Fire TV before?

Okay, get this: Amazon and Google are two of the biggest companies in the world, and they’re always competing with each other. That’s why YouTube was originally on the Fire Stick, but then it got pulled in 2017 due to their ongoing rivalry. For about a year and a half, Fire TV users had to use Amazon’s web browser or unofficial web apps to get around the ban. But in April 2019, things changed. Google and Amazon kissed and made up, and they made a joint announcement. YouTube was coming back to the Fire Stick, and Amazon Prime Video would finally support Chromecast!

In July 2019, the official app returned to Fire TV, but unfortunately, YouTube TV wasn’t included. It wasn’t available on Fire Stick either, since Google removed YouTube from Amazon. Thankfully, in September 2019, YouTube TV finally arrived on Fire Stick, so now you can stream your favorite live TV shows.

According to Amazon, these are the Fire TV devices compatible with YouTube TV:

1. Fire TV Stick (Second Generation)

2. Fire TV Stick 4K

3. Fire TV Cube (Second Generation)

4. Fire TV Edition smart TV (Element, Westinghouse, Toshiba, and Insignia Fire TV models)

5. Fire TV Cube (First Generation)

6. Fire TV (Second Generation)

7. Fire TV (Third Generation)

However, the first-generation Fire TV Stick and Fire TV aren’t compatible with YouTube TV. But don’t worry, there’s a workaround, which I’ll explain later.

To set up YouTube TV on Fire Stick, follow these steps:

1. Go to your Fire TV/Fire Stick Home Screen.

2. Use your remote to select the ‘Search’ option on the left side.

3. Type ‘YouTube TV’ using your remote.

4. Choose the YouTube TV app from the suggested list.

5. Press the ‘Get’ button to download the app.

Once the app is downloaded, you’ll find it among your apps on the home screen. Just launch it, sign in to your account, and enjoy your favorite television shows.

If you’re having trouble getting the YouTube TV app from the app store or if your Fire TV device isn’t compatible, you can still get the app through another method. However, this method is a bit more complex and involves a few thorough steps.

Step 1: Allow Apps from Unknown Sources

Since the app isn’t available from the official app store, you’ll need to allow your device to install apps from other sources.

1. Open your Fire TV device.

2. Go to ‘Settings.’

3. Select ‘My Fire TV’ (or ‘Device’ in older models).

4. Navigate to ‘Developer options.’

5. Enable the ‘Apps from unknown sources’ option.

Step 2: Get the Downloader App

Follow steps 1-2 from the previous section and search for the Downloader app. Install it so you can download the YouTube TV app.

Step 3: Download the YouTube TV App

Once you’ve set up the Downloader app, you’ll need to download the YouTube TV app. Remember, this is a third-party app and not the official release by Google.

1. Open the Downloader app.

2. Enter the following link: https://firestickhelp.com/ytv (if it doesn’t work, try https://firestickhelp.com/ytv2).

3. Select ‘Go.’ The APK file will start downloading, and a window will pop up automatically.

4. Choose ‘Install.’

After the app is installed, launch it, customize the options according to your preferences, and enjoy the app.

Using a third-party app should be your last resort. It’s always safer to use the official platform instead of third-party apps, which can cause issues or contain harmful data. You may even get into legal trouble. It’s better to spend money on top-quality content that runs smoothly and offers plenty of features. However, if you don’t have a choice, it’s better than nothing.
