Setting Up a Gmail Alias: A Step-by-Step Guide
Today, I’ll show you how to create an alias in Gmail. With this handy feature, you can send and receive emails using a different email address without having to create a whole new account. It’s a great way to manage multiple email identities from one central place.
To get started, follow these simple steps:
1. Open Gmail: First, you’ll need to open your Gmail account. Go to mail.google.com and log in with your existing credentials. If you don’t have an account yet, you can create one by clicking on “Create account.”
2. Access Settings: Once you’re logged in, look for the gear icon in the top-right corner of the screen. Click on it, and a drop-down menu will appear. From the menu, select “Settings.”
3. Go to the “Accounts and Import” tab: In the Settings menu, you’ll find various tabs. Click on the “Accounts and Import” tab to access the necessary settings.
4. Find the “Send mail as” section: Scroll down until you see the “Send mail as” section. Here, you’ll find the option to add a new email address to your Gmail account.
5. Add a new email alias: Click on the “Add another email address” link. A new window will pop up, allowing you to enter the email address you want to use as an alias.
6. Enter the alias details: In the pop-up window, enter the name you want to be displayed as the sender when using your alias. Then, enter the email address you wish to use as the alias. Make sure to leave the “Treat as an alias” checkbox checked.
7. Configure SMTP settings: Once you’ve entered the alias details, click on “Next Step.” In the following window, you’ll need to configure the outgoing email server settings (SMTP). If you’re not sure about these settings, you can contact your email hosting provider for assistance.
8. Verify your alias: After configuring the SMTP settings, click on “Send Verification.” Gmail will send a verification code to the email address you entered as the alias. Check your inbox, and enter the verification code into the provided field.
9. Confirm alias creation: Once you’ve entered the verification code, click on “Verify.” Congratulations! You’ve successfully set up an alias in your Gmail account.
From now on, when composing a new email in Gmail, you’ll see a dropdown menu next to the “From” field, allowing you to choose which email address you want to use as the sender. You can easily switch between your primary email address and your newly added alias.
Remember, having an alias in Gmail is a convenient way to manage multiple email identities without the hassle of maintaining separate accounts. Enjoy the flexibility and simplicity of this feature, and make sure to keep your communication organized and efficient.

Just about everyone I know has at least one Gmail address. Some people use it for work, while others use it for personal or general use. If you have a Gmail address, you probably know how challenging it can be to manage junk and the different types of emails that come in every day. Labels help keep things organized, but using aliases is the key to keeping things really neat.
A Gmail alias is essentially a secondary email address that is part of your main Google account. I use aliases all the time. For example, I have one specifically for insurances and other services that tend to send a lot of spam. I have another one for gaming and game website logins. I also have one for friends and family, as well as one for work. Setting up aliases takes less than a minute, but the impact it has on my organization is well worth the effort.
There are two types of aliases in Gmail. The first type involves appending ‘+insurance’ to your main address, while the second type serves as a mail handler for another email. The second type means allowing Gmail to handle emails from other sources, such as your web host. Since the first type is more useful, I’ll explain that one first.
Creating aliases for mail filtering
Gmail has a great spam filter, but being able to ignore my insurances alias for months at a time is even better. Even if companies promise not to share your email address, you always seem to get a flood of spam after each renewal quote. Having an alias just for that allows you to ignore it until you actually need it.
For example, I use emailaddress+insurance@gmail.com for my insurance renewals, and emailaddress+gamer@gmail.com for games websites and forums. I find it helpful to create a label for each alias to keep things organized.
- Log into your Gmail inbox.
- Select More in the left menu and then Create new label.
- Give the label a meaningful name and select Create.
- Drag an email that corresponds to the alias from your Inbox into the label folder.
For instance, if I use emailaddress+insurance@gmail.com, I drag the email from my Inbox to the Insurance label that I created. This creates a connection between the email and the label.
You can also select the checkbox of an email in your inbox, click the Labels icon in the top center, add a label, and go from there. All future emails will then be automatically added to that label folder.
Create a forwarding alias in Gmail
Creating an alias in Gmail is quite simple, but you need an existing email for it to work. This method allows you to manage emails from another provider within Gmail, which is equally useful but completely different from filtering emails.
Before you set this up, you’ll need to configure email forwarding in the account you want to use as an alias. The process may vary depending on your email provider or web host, but generally, you need to add your email to a forwarded address and specify your Gmail address as the destination. Afterward, you can create the alias.
- Open your Gmail account and log in.
- Click on the gear icon on the right of your inbox and select Settings.
- Select the Accounts and Imports tab.
- Click on the Add another email address link in the center.
- Enter your name and email address in the box.
- Select the verification type and complete the process.
The final verification step involves receiving an email at the original email address you created the alias for. Log into your forwarded email address, click the link from Gmail, and verify your account. Once you’re done, your Gmail address will receive emails from your other address, and you can choose to ‘Send as’ the other address as well.
You can repeat this process as many times as you like. It’s especially useful if you have a website with several addresses like info@ or store@ or admin@. You can set up forwarding for each email and have them all sent to your Gmail alias, allowing you to respond to them as you see fit. You can also add labels for even more organization.
Both of these methods for adding an alias in Gmail work well. Since you’re already spending time in Gmail, it saves you from logging in and out of multiple email accounts and prevents your inbox from being overwhelmed by spam. Do you use aliases in Gmail?
